What is down?
Down refers to the soft layer of fine feathers found underneath the outer feathers of ducks, geese and other water fowl. This layer of down feathers provides warmth and insulation, which the birds need because they spend large amounts of time in the water in cold weather. Down feathers do not have quills. Down loses its insulating properties when wet and takes a long time to dry.
Where is it found?
Down is used in blankets, comforters, sleeping bags, jackets, and pillows. Humane alternatives include kapok, organic cotton, REFILL and synthetic fabrics like Thinsulate.
Why should I be concerned?
The justifications used for the human exploitation of geese and ducks are the same ones that have been used for the exploitation of African Americans, women, and domesticated animals. Most down and feathers are removed from birds during slaughter, but some geese are live-plucked. Animal agriculture is the #1 contributor to global warming, and down is a product of animal agriculture.
