What is tung oil?
Two types of tung oil products are currently in use: "tung oil" and "pure tung oil".
Tung oil
Tung oil is a generic term applied to a variety of wood finishes that contain pure tung oil and also usually contain petroleum distillates and/or additives.
Pure tung oil
Some of our suppliers use Chinese pure tung oil to finish their wooden toys for us. It contains just what its name implies--only pure tung oil without any additives or distillates.
Pure tung oil does not build-up a glossy or heavy finish. Because it contains no distillates, it dries more slowly than tung oil. It provides excellent water-resistance. Because it must be rubbed or brushed on, it is much more labor-intensive than other oils (such as mineral oil). Pure tung oil can attract dirt, so we recommend regular cleaning of toys finished with pure tung oil, followed by reapplications of the oil.
Pure tung oil has long been favored by woodworkers because it:
- maintains its elasticity so it moves with the wood as it adjusts to the changing seasons
- penetrates deeply into even the most dense wood to enhance its natural beauty and character
- provides natural water-resistance (when properly applied, water will bead up on the surface)
- offers easy maintenance; simply reapply as needed
- dries faster than linseed oil
- does not darken with age as much as linseed oil
- does not mold like linseed oil
- is FDA approved for food contact
- has a pleasant, light nutty odor
