Solid wood is wood that has been milled from a tree, as opposed to engineered wood (like plywood, MDF, or particleboard). Solid wood may be either hardwood or softwood.

Many people think solid wood is more attractive than engineered wood. Solid wood is stronger than some types of engineered wood (such as fiberboard) but weaker than others (such as plywood). Water can damage solid wood, causing it to warp and mold. Unlike most engineered woods, however, solid wood will not disintegrate when wet.

Solid wood is typically more expensive than engineered wood, although prices for some modern engineered woods (such as those made from FSC-certified wood with lower levels of Return to Glossary
