What is softwood?
What is softwood? The term "softwood" is actually not based on the hardness or density of the wood, but rather on how the tree reproduces. While all trees reproduce with seeds, there are two main classifications of seed structures: angiosperms and gymnosperms.

Softwoods are gymnosperms, plants whose seeds have no covering at all (such as pine cones). Pine and cedar are examples of softwoods commonly used to make the wooden toys and furniture we carry.

You can also say that hardwoods are deciduous (trees who lose their leaves seasonally) and softwoods are evergreens.

Typically hardwood is denser and harder than softwood, but exceptions do exist (for example, balsa is a hardwood that is softer than most softwoods).

Our Customers Say ...
  • "Customer service is exceptional and very attentive. I was updated on all parts of the ordering process via email messages. Plus, I had chosen a faster, more expensive shipping method (UPS 3 day), but they wrote and told me it was faster and cheaper to send via UPS Ground because of my location. Highly recommend this store and will definitely shop here again!"
