What is hardwood?
Hardwoods are angiosperms, plants that produce seeds with some sort of covering (this may be in the form of a fruit, such as a cherry, or a hard shell, such as an acorn). Cherry, oak, maple, walnut, poplar, ash, and birch are examples of hardwoods commonly used to make the wooden toys and furniture we carry.
You can also say that hardwoods are deciduous (trees who lose their leaves seasonally) and softwoods are evergreens.
Typically hardwood is denser and harder than softwood, but exceptions do exist (for example, balsa is a hardwood that is softer than most softwoods).
