What is Canvas?

Canvas is an extremely heavy-duty plain
woven fabric ("Plain woven" means that the
weft and
warp form a simple criss-cross pattern, which is made by passing each weft thread over one warp thread, then under one, then over one, and so on. The next weft thread goes under the warp thread that the prior weft thread went over and vice versa.). It is typically made from cotton, but may also be made from linen or hemp. Canvas is commonly used for tents, shoes, backpacks, and sails, andwhen stretched across a frameas an artist's painting surface.
