What is benzene?
Benzene is an organic compound compound that is a colorless and highly flammable liquid with a sweet smell.
Where is it found?
Benzene is most commonly produced from petroleum so it may be used as a solvent and in the production of many medications, synthetic rubber, plastics (especially Nylon) and dyes. It is also found in cigarette smoke and is produced when PVC is burned. Many glues, paints, furniture waxes and detergents contain benzene and can release it into the air. Benzene is also produced naturally by volcanoes and forest fires. It is NOT found in natural latex rubber.
Why should I be concerned?
Benzene is classified by the US Department of Health and Human Services as a human carcinogen and endocrine disrupter. Exposure to low levels of airborne benzene can cause headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, unconsciousness and rapid heart rate.
