Dust mites are microscopic arachnids (the same group as spiders) that feed on flakes of shed human skin. They thrive in mattresses, pillows, comforters, blankets, carpets, upholstered furniture, and stuffed toys.
Dust mites are the most common cause of asthma and allergies worldwide. Exposure to their body parts and waste (feces) can trigger symptoms in sensitive individuals and can actually cause asthma and allergies in people without any prior history of these illnesses.
Any non-waterproof mattress would require an external dust mite barrier encasing to prevent dust mites from penetrating the mattress. However, an organic waterproof pad or airflow sheet will provide dust-mite protection for the top of the mattress which is where the majority of the problem lies.
Naturepedic offers a line of organic mattresses and mattress pads with waterproof polyethylene surfaces that cannot be penetrated by dust-mites. There is no need for any additional dust mite barriers for these models.
While they are prolific, you can take simple steps to reduce your family's exposure to dust mites.
Cover non-waterproof/non-washable mattresses, pillows and comforters with zippered barrier cloth covers.
Vacuum carpets regularly and dispose of the vacuum bags.
Wash all bedding weekly in hot water.
Choose machine washable stuffed toys and wash them in hot water weekly, or freeze them for at least one hour.
Keep the humidity in your home below 50%.
