Maggie's Organics Organic Cotton Penguin Stuffed Toys are traditional toys made modern and green with the organic cotton and recycled materials, and fair labor. Each penguin is hand-sewn on a 100% worker-owned co-operative in North Carolina, so each one is unique.
The story of Maggie's Organics Organic Cotton Penguin Stuffed Toys began when the company had a batch of their popular organic cotton crew socks that just didn't quite meet their standards. The owners concluded that the knitting machines they were using were the cause and they sought to to locate the same style of knitting machines that had been used to first make these socks that their customers loved so much. They were successful in finding the old-style knitting machines and promptly put them to use, but they were left with thousands of pairs of less-than-perfect organic cotton socks.
After much discussion of eco-friendly options, Maggie's decided to recycle the socks into stuffed toys for children. Their sock monkey was the first in the Maggie's Menagerie line, and the Penguin is the second. All are produced entirely with fair labor in the USA. The pre-consumer recycled polyester fiber filling is scrap material from a mill in neighboring South Carolina. To make the toys safe for even very young children, Maggie's Organics hand embroiders each penguin's face so no small parts can come off.
